Art and Charm – kina grannis
1The more I’m off on my own, exploring and expressing, the more I appreciate real art, and the process to get there.
Because of this, the processed well produced timbaland hot joint is losing appeal and the underground everyday people are more appealing. I have done the youtube thing looking at the top played musicians, Marie Digby being one of my favorites, not only for her cover of Umbrella, and Incubus’ Love Hurts, but her absolutely adorable stupid for you video. Then when her cd came out (which I bought) I was like supporting a friend? And when I heard her in the supermarket I was so happy for her! I would never be happy for anyone else to make it big? I dont really know how that works, since I don’t know any pop stars.
Anyway, I also listen to miss Kina Grannis, who does the youtube cover / original blend and is soon to blow up huge too I’m sure. She has an extreme amount of charm, so much that even watching her open mail is a happy experience? I dont know how she does it, it is such levels of charm only seen by natalie portman in garden state, OC’s Rachel Bilson, youtube’s comedy queen happyslip, and little star wars girl, maybe its a mouth thing. I haven’t figured it out yet.
Irregardless, her music is really good too! She even says Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday to you too Kina.

And talks about nerdy stuff!

I’m going to request this one on the radio when she makes it big… but I don’t listen to the radio, ok whatev. Just watch
beware the ides, and reviews
0I survived the ides of march. Did you?
I have been living with a cat and I have related this to people. Some just walk around, want attention, then get out of the way when work needs to be done. They make noise and might cuddle or sit on your lap but they don’t really contribute or have any depth. Of course they are just animals but if i get a girlfriend who was like that, I will light my socks on fire, then i should wake up, give her a can of food and kick her out the door. (No i don’t have anyone like this right now, I am just hypothesizing future problems because my life is so vacant of real problems)
I also minireview some things!

Girl Rock, the rock kind
0Avril Lavigne (halfblech half meh), or Ashlee Simpson (double blech) might be ‘girl rock’ but there is also rocking girl rock?
Tegan and Sara are one of my favorites, but I wouldn’t call them quite rock. Most people don’t know who they are, and if you are one of them, go pick up The Con, or any T&S album really, they are a solid A Rilo Kiley is also an A and also pop. But there’s more to girls than pop…
Ole global pandora just came back so I can broaden music horizons! Yay. http://globalpandora.com/
I heard Paramore on muchmusic way back a few months ago and thought it was catchy and edgy. I think the female vocals is a welcome change from my perhaps accustomed rock taste centralizing on foofighters nirvana linkin park that have grown to be background noise.
So I picked up the paramore Riot CD and grew to love perhaps one of the quieter songs. I listen to it allllllll the time now, I dont know if its actually really good, or just fits a niche that I’m into right now.
With the help of global pandora I extended my preference to a few other female lead vocal rock groups. It’s not girl rock since they aren’t really girl singers or for girl listeners
Rock with crushcrushcrush, my intro to rocking girl rock
Here are a few more vids to my other new found musical tastes (more…)
Robot music
0daft punk dresses up as robots all the time.

Here are the lyrics to robot rock which is a new song of theirs. I am totally picking this song next time I go to kareoke
And their brand spankin new Alive 2007 live cd is pretty good. I think it is a lot better and more interesting than the normal cds that you might get tired of. They mix and add a lot more things together than a typical cd. I’d give it a listen if you have any house / electronic bone in you. It’s almost like you’re cool enough to be at a club.
They have undeniable skills in writing, cutting, pasting, saving, loading, checking, quick – rewriting, plugging, playing, burning, ripping, drag and dropping, zip – unzipping, locking, filling, calling, finding, viewing, coding, jam – unlocking, surfing, scrolling, posing, clicking, crossing, cracking, twitch – updating, naming, reading, tuning, printing, scanning, sending, fax – renaming, touching, bringing, paying, watching, turning, leaving, stop – formating.
Daft Punk – Technologic
Oh, and the most nerdy video i’ve ever seen… each person is a note? or something its ridonk. The song is a lot better remixed on the alive cd, but this is a good for a watch. Giants = bass, girls = high, skeleton = futurebleep, alien = vocals, mummies = drums/clapping? It breaks down later.
November music. epic
0November!
Muse Absolution cd is just flat out epic. I’ve probably mentioned this before but its not just good, it is epic. Just like the movie gladiator or something. Its just like powerful piece of art that defines something.
- I love the new Alicia Keys cd too, Superwoman is my fav. Ms Keys is maybe on my top 10 artists these days. Big fan. This might be an A. I like a bunch of other songs too and its just well done.
- Leona Lewis bleeding love single is catchy, and soulful. It is also well written and reminds me of Alicia Keys a bit. I will be on the look out for her album. She’s a brit idol winner and will be on the rise soon.
- Britney‘s new album is a bit of a club thumper that will please the beat fans. Very well produced I think but thats what is to be expected. It reminds me of the future direction that JT took with Futuresex/lovesounds. Britney is somewhat repugnant but whatever, I liked the Paris cd so i’m willing to listen to this one. So far Piece of Me is different enough for me to like at this point. It might be annoying later though. I don’t expect it to be huge at this point, regardless of her new place on the “not hot” list.
- Also Mute Math deserves a listen, nothing new but I haven’t mentioned them before. Its a bit softer rock but still creative and enjoyable. Perhaps a new favorite. I dont know how to describe it. They don’t have any songs that stand out, they are an album experience to be enjoyed or not.
- Chamillionaire is a good rapper and I’m glad he isn’t as talentless as 50 Cent, so Ultimate Victory is gettign some play time.
- But the king of rap is still the jigga man, Jay-Z, and I really enjoy his complete album experience of american gangster.
- I decided to check out Timbaland‘s Shock Value , and it was as expected. High production value but low musical value. Apologize is the best track but you can hear that a million times on the radio and skip this disc.
- Casting Crowns new cd is quite good. Nothing grabs me, I can see it fading to the never-played shelf. It sorta fits into their other works too. It might win a grammy, it has a lot of quality to it.
- tobyMac’s portable sounds cd is good too, its not very new and its very catchy to the point of fluff but whatever, I still play it from time to time.
Music of October
1Plain White T’s are famous for ‘hey there delilah’. I listened to their newest CD today; very forgettable. I even like lightish pop stuff. But this is just fluff to me. Sorry if you’re a fan. I give it a C , he has a nice voice but thats it.
Muse Absolution however is a glorious CD, In Vancouver I wandered town like I do every time I am there. I found a place called taco town, and not so far away is an art gallery. There I saw a full painting sized version of the album cover along with a few others from muse and pink floyd. It was neat. I took a picture, its in my picasa somewhere. I’m still bummed Muse came to UofC and I missed it.

Other music I like this week. Katie Melua will get some play time (norah jones ish, light pop, she’s 23 like me!) Bright Eyes is alright (umm, light indie rock?), new Foo Fighters is good, Metallica- Master of Puppets is classic, Nelly Furtado – Say it right. and… tobymac.
I was much more into Kanye’s last two CDs. Not that this one is bad, its just not as gripping. Best of TLC cd is kinda stale. Best of Aerosmith is pretty good, cause you know pink is my favorite crayon. Best of Dr Dre is not as good as my compilation of Dre songs, there are only 5-10 that I like. I really don’t know if he is that talented, he’s more of a timbaland ‘whats hot’ type of producer in knowing what is popular at the time (90s) and pumping that out. I have a new Vanessa Carleton CD too, there is a nice u2 cover of where the streets, but otherwise I haven’t played the cd much so I can’t say.
Interpretive dance Talent
0Some talents are totally useless in our current culture, this one gets laughs now and forever, but still doesn’t seem to translate into the most successful living. He is very very good though, but do we care beyond the 3 minutes of entertainment he provides?
This week is Oasis week, truly an amazing band.
Can you do the
0Frug? The Robocop? The Freddie? The Smurf?
I watched this, (see 1:55 remain) and was three for four.
But like the singer in Rilo Kiley … I can not do the smurf. Because I dont know what it is.
Music i like on a show i don't
0I was watching the hills while making dinner. (I swear i don’t watch the show)
and they had lame cat fights and were discussing betrayal. They played marie digby’s original song stupid for you! And then they played muse – supermassive blackhole. Wow I was surprised. But not enough to keep watching.
The tv show ‘the hills’ is pretty much the definition of drivel. But you probably know that, and love or hate it anyway. Supermassive black hole! Hah, i guess it fits
But seriously, watching trendy shows is a really smart way to find good music these days. So much better than the radio. (Sheridan is a proud owner of 5 of the 6 “The OC” Soundtrack CDs)
Musical Dibs! – Rilo Kiley
0So I am into artsy girl rock these days. Like Tegan and Sara .. who are now famous and from Calgary!
But I came across some random 17 year old aussie girl who friended me on last.fm and she liked rilo kiley this week. It was like 4 plays for rilo kiley to 3 for spoon. Hardly a music fan… but I must say, I like it a lot!
Rilo Kiley – Portions for Foxes
Rilo Kiley – The Moneymaker
Then I found out they are playing at the season premiere for SNL. Bah! Good thing I get dibs before then.
BTW, SNL has had Shins and Arcade Fire last year. So I have to respect whoever picks music over there.
Now it says Kanye West is playing at the premiere. Oh well. Their loss! Well. I’m a Kanye fan too. So glad the fiddy cent thing is fading, Kanye’s stuff is better produced other than the timbaland timberlake ‘ayo’.
