Ode to my x300, macbook air can go propel a kite
So I brought my big beefy beast of a pc with me on the airplane, with a $40 overweight charge no less.
But I haven’t used it yet, other than to make sure it turns on. Why you might ask? Well I dont have a monitor yet and haven’t urgently needed one. Some time ago when my pocketpc got smashed I decided to look for another secondary computing device. I was browsing ebay for cheap small monitors which then turned to cheap small laptops which landed me looking at these dell x300s which I directly compare to the new macbook air which is all the buzz.
Now it looks small, its only 12″ and there’s no cd drive. But guess what, nobody needs one anymore!? Well I can buy an external docking bay but really I dont need it. There’s a little thing called cd drive spoofing where you can just download, or ‘obtain’ the data of a cd and then mount it to a fake cd drive. Plus I dont intend to install a lot of cd applications or use cd … music on this laptop.
So this x300 apparently has mediocre batterylife but I wouldn’t know because I sorta picked up the extra (200% bigger) big battery on a whim.
The lappy weighs 2.9lbs with a normal battery, its about 1.1 inches thick. Its around 1ghz and it cost me $450 SHIPPED
Oh, and then there’s this ‘air’ macbook apple came out with, also tiny, 3lbs, 0.7 inches thick no cd drive and costs $1900 to start. Sure its a 13.3″ screen and the processor is probably twice as fast.
No, that fancypants steve jobs laptop is not 4x better than mine. Even if it has a picture of glowing fruit on the top and a marketing-induced feeling of higher status. I’ll keep my extra $1450 thank you very much. I dont need your overmarketed ipod either mr turtleneck man.

So I just started a new practicum at a learning through the arts school. The moment I walked into the library I was thankful for the extravagant MacBook purchase I made in September… eMac’s, iMac’s and MacBook’s EVERYWHERE! Students can even check out MacBook’s from the library and use them in their classroom. They also have a whole option that is completely GarageBand. And the students are ridiculously proficient on the Mac’s!
They have their place Sheridan, they have their place… just not on your desk.
